KATHMANDU: UNESCO and Kathmandu University’s School of Education have launched a new national-level training program aimed at strengthening climate education in schools across Nepal.

According to the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, the initiative titled “Leading Green Schools and Climate-Ready Classrooms” was introduced on the occasion World Environment Day today as a three-credit micro-credential course for school leaders and teachers.

The program is designed to bridge gaps in climate literacy by equipping educators with skills to integrate environmental awareness and climate action into both school management and classroom teaching.

The course is structured into two modules—green school leadership and climate-ready classroom practice—and includes an intensive workshop, assessments, and school-based action projects.

A key requirement of the program is team participation, with principals and designated “green focal teachers” trained together to ensure coordinated implementation at the school level.

Supported by the Norwegian Embassy and implemented under a UNESCO–UNICEF partnership, the pilot phase will reach 100 schools across all seven provinces in collaboration with the Principals Association of Nepal.

Organizers said the program aligns with Nepal’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and aims to translate national policy into practical action in classrooms.
