BEIJING: Nepal aims to forge a deeper relationship with China with a primary focus on boosting economic growth through infrastructure, science, and technology, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Speaking during his four-day official visit to Beijing, Khanal emphasized that advancing major projects under the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network—such as cross-border railways, roads, and power grids—is vital to transforming Nepal from a landlocked nation into a “land-linked” country.

“Our priority for these connectivity projects is largely to forge a stronger relationship with China,” Khanal said, noting that improved infrastructure will help bridge bilateral trade and people-to-people exchanges.

He revealed that Nepal expects to receive a full feasibility report from China regarding a joint cross-border railway project by the end of June, while ground surveys for the Chilime-Kerung cross-border transmission line are also moving forward.

Addressing the timing of his trip, which closely follows an official visit to India, Khanal underscored the importance of maintaining diplomatic balance.

He described both neighboring countries as vital, ancient civilizational partners, stating that his travel itinerary reflects the high value Nepal places on building strong, independent relations with both global powers.
