KATHMANDU: Health and Food Safety Minister Nisha Mehta has announced that preparations are underway to amend existing legal frameworks to make the health insurance program more effective.

Responding to lawmakers’ questions regarding the ministry’s budget in the House of Representatives, Minister Mehta stated that the process to improve the Health Insurance Act has begun.

She detailed ongoing discussions to streamline the system by clarifying the link between basic healthcare and insurance, mandating health insurance for citizens in the organized sector, and integrating the social health security fund into the core national insurance system.

Emphasizing that the ministry is operating health programs based on the government’s annual policies and budget, the Minister expressed readiness to accept suggestions from experts and parliamentarians, asserting that the upcoming fiscal year’s policies will establish a solid foundation for further development in the healthcare sector.
