KATHMANDU: The water supply to the Kathmandu Valley has been temporarily suspended starting today after floodwaters entered the source of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.

According to Bir Bahadur Chand, spokesperson for Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the supply of water flowing from Melamchi to the water treatment plant in Sundarijal has been temporarily stopped because high turbidity (muddiness) at the source has complicated the water treatment process.

“Continuous rainfall has made the water at the source extremely muddy,” Chand said. “Once the water quality improves, the treatment process will resume, and water supply will be restored according to the pre-scheduled distribution timetable.”

Officials added that if the heavy rainfall continues, it may take some time to restore the water supply to Kathmandu.
