KATHMANDU: The body of 25-year-old Ganesh Nepali has been transferred to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) for an autopsy, following his tragic death from self-immolation.

Police confirmed the body was moved late Friday night as an angry crowd of relatives and supporters gathered at the hospital premises, forcing authorities to heavily upgrade security at the facility.

The victim’s family is demanding immediate legal action against federal authorities and a sweeping review of the municipal policies that drove him to the extreme step.

Nepali, a native of Mugu, succumbed to severe burn injuries on Friday morning after setting himself on fire on Thursday in front of the Department of Passports in Tripureshwar, following a heated dispute with municipal police.

The tragedy has ignited furious public outrage, prompting street protests and a fierce political backlash inside federal parliament.

Demonstrators gathered at Maitighar Mandala and the Bir Hospital premises on Friday, demanding the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Balen Shah and marching with placards accusing the administration’s centralized policies of driving Nepali to his death.

Inside the legislature on Friday, opposition lawmakers slammed the government’s cruelty and the Prime Minister’s silence on the issue, with NCP lawmaker Bishnu Bahadur Bishwakarma demanding strict punishment for the personnel involved, and Nepali Congress Chief Whip Basana Thapa urging the Prime Minister to take off his black sunglasses and see the problems of the people.
