KATHMANDU: A deeply troubling wave of self-immolations has emerged across Nepal, with a third incident reported in the capital this morning, closely following a critical attempt in Sarlahi yesterday and a tragic fatality earlier in the week.

Early Saturday morning, 45-year-old Ashwin Raut attempted self-immolation inside his residence in Buddhanagar, Kathmandu, following a domestic dispute the previous evening.

Rescued from his kitchen while his family was away, Raut was rushed to Bir Hospital with severe burns covering 50% of his body.

This follows a critical incident on Friday in Sarlahi, where 35-year-old Bibek Mandal of Godaita Municipality-10 set himself on fire.

Mandal sustained life-threatening injuries with burns covering approximately 85% of his body and was airlifted by helicopter to Kathmandu, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Kirtipur Burn Hospital.

These consecutive events come amid heightened public shock over the death of Ganesh Nepali.

A ride-sharing driver originally from Mugu, Nepali attempted self-immolation in Tripureshwar on Thursday after a dispute with municipal police and succumbed to his extensive injuries at Bir Hospital on Friday.

Authorities are conducting separate investigations into the distinct circumstances surrounding each incident.
