KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has called for an independent and impartial investigation into the shooting incident in Kaptanganj, Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3, Sunsari, which claimed a civilian’s life.

In a statement issued on Monday, Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa expressed grief over the incident and urged the government to conduct a credible investigation to establish the facts. He also called for immediate treatment for the injured and adequate support for the family of the deceased.

Thapa questioned why the situation escalated to the point where security forces opened fire, resulting in the loss of a civilian’s life. He said the state should have exercised greater restraint, vigilance, and coordination to prevent the incident, particularly given its potential to affect social harmony.

The Nepali Congress also urged the government to handle the situation with sensitivity to maintain peace, security, and public confidence in the affected area. Thapa appealed to local residents, political parties, civil society, and community organizations to avoid rumors and provocation, and to help preserve communal harmony. He also extended condolences to the bereaved family and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, including security personnel.
