KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has strongly cautioned against pursuing political motives within Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), stressing that the Governor must not be treated like a civil servant subject to routine transfers or arbitrary dismissals.

Speaking at a House Finance Committee discussion on a bill drafted to amend the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2002, Wagle emphasized that political interference in the central bank would yield disastrous consequences for its institutional autonomy.

He explained that the proposed amendment aims to modernize the central bank’s organizational structure, clarify the roles and appointment processes of the Governor and board of directors, and introduce provisions to protect officials from prosecution for actions taken in good faith.
