RASUWA: Electric vehicle (EV) imports through the Rasuwagadhi (Timure) customs point surged dramatically in the fiscal year 2025/26, driven by rising domestic demand. More than 6,500 Chinese electric cars, jeeps, vans, and mini-buses entered Nepal via Kerung.

This influx generated historic revenue for the Rasuwa Customs Office, bringing in over Rs 15 billion from EV duties alone—accounting for more than 60% of the office’s total revenue.

The import momentum remained strong despite minor government tax adjustments in the budget, as consumers favored Chinese EVs for their low operational costs, eco-friendliness, and advanced technology.

Officials credit the checkpoint’s evolution into a major EV hub to improved Chinese road infrastructure, tech-friendly systems, and streamlined procedures.

However, the fiscal year also faced administrative challenges. Prior to the budget announcement, an attempt by traders and customs staff to illicitly pre-clear around 200 EVs that had not yet arrived at the border was uncovered.

Consequently, the Ministry of Finance and the Department of Customs suspended 13 employees, including the Chief Customs Officer. A new leadership team has since made the clearance process more transparent.

Looking ahead, construction of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) and the Dry Port in Timure is in its final phases. These facilities are expected to further boost trade and vehicle management efficiency starting in the upcoming fiscal year.
