BIRATNAGAR: Notorious gang leader Abhishek Giri was arrested by police from his residence in Madhumara, Biratnagar Metropolitan City-8, on Saturday morning.

District Police Chief of Morang, Superintendent of Police (SP) Kabit Katwal, confirmed that the arrest was executed following intelligence reports indicating the presence of illegal weapons at Giri’s home.

Police are currently gathering evidence as Giri faces active investigations into a series of recent criminal activities launched under the guise of social work since his release from Morang Prison three years ago.

Giri has a long and violent criminal history, including a 2008 case where he was accused of hacking Karan Yadav to death with a sword in Biratnagar, a charge for which he was eventually acquitted in 2012.

Following his acquittal, he relocated his operations to Kathmandu, leading to a 2013 arrest for orchestrating the kidnapping and extortion of a water supply utility accountant.

Giri had used his girlfriend to lure the official to a room in Lalitpur, holding him hostage for Rs 1 million ransom, an offense that ultimately secured him a 10-year prison sentence.

Even while incarcerated, Giri frequently made headlines for running extortion rackets, which triggered a bitter and violent rivalry with fellow gang leader Parshuram Basnet.

After Giri allegedly ordered a hit on Basnet from inside his cell in 2009, Basnet retaliated in 2011 by orchestrating a brazen physical assault on Giri right inside the Morang District Court premises.

Most recently, authorities have accused Giri of running extortion rings and terrorizing inmates inside Morang Prison from the outside, and SP Katwal stated that the police will conduct a comprehensive investigation into both his historical offenses and his latest criminal operations.
