KATHMANDU: The United States has lowered its travel advisory for Nepal to Level 2, urging travelers to exercise increased caution despite an overall stable security situation. The advisory notes that nationwide demonstrations that began in September 2025 have subsided but warns that protests and localized unrest may still occur, particularly in urban areas.

The updated guidance cautions that demonstrations can arise with little warning and may quickly turn violent, advising travelers to avoid large crowds and follow instructions from local authorities.

It also highlights concerns over limited medical capacity in Nepal. While hospitals in Kathmandu are relatively better equipped than those in other regions, they may be overcrowded, lack essential medicines, and often require upfront payment. The US government does not cover medical treatment for its citizens abroad.

Travelers are advised to carry necessary medications; obtain comprehensive travel insurance, including medical evacuation; and be prepared to seek treatment outside Nepal in case of serious illness.

The advisory further warns of natural disasters, including earthquakes, floods, and landslides, which are common in Nepal. The monsoon season from June to September poses additional risks, with heavy rains capable of triggering flash floods and blocking roads.

Travelers are encouraged to monitor local media, avoid demonstrations, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive updates and facilitate emergency contact.
