KATHMANDU: Squatters temporarily housed at the Radha Swami Satsang Holding Center in Kirtipur have warned that they will return to their previous location and rebuild shelters if they are not provided with a proper alternative.

The warning to the government comes after a notice was issued ordering them to vacate the holding center by tomorrow (Friday).

Meanwhile, the Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee has reportedly asked residents at the holding centre to provide their bank account details. The information is being collected for the distribution of the government’s promised Rs 25,000 assistance payment.

However, many residents believe the request signals that the government intends to remove them from the facility without arranging proper resettlement. Authorities have also reportedly restricted photography and videography inside the holding centre.

The settlers have expressed anger over what they describe as pressure to leave the facility within five days after receiving the Rs 25,000 support and making their own housing arrangements.

In protest, they have posted a statement titled “Concern Letter of the Victims” outside the holding centre, voicing dissatisfaction with the government’s approach.

They maintain that unless a permanent alternative and suitable place to live is provided, they will be forced to return to their former settlement and erect makeshift shelters once again.
