JAKARTA: A passenger bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker truck on Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Wednesday, killing at least 16 people and injuring four others, officials said.

The accident occurred on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in South Sumatra’s North Musi Rawas region when an intercity bus carrying around 20 passengers crashed into an oncoming tanker truck.

Authorities said preliminary reports suggest sparks may have come from the bus just before the collision, possibly causing the driver to swerve.

However, the tanker approached at high speed, leading to a direct impact. The crash triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles, trapping passengers inside.

Those killed include the bus driver, 13 passengers, and the tanker driver and assistant, all of whom died in the blaze.
