KATHMANDU: Nepal has received only a small portion of its approved foreign investment commitments, according to the Office of the Auditor General.

The Auditor General’s 63rd Annual Report states that foreign investment proposals worth Rs 79.69 billion from 1,009 investors were approved in fiscal year 2024/25.

However, only Rs 11.30 billion was actually brought into the country by just 97 investors — only 14% of the approved amount.

The report shows a declining trend between foreign investment commitments and actual inflows in recent years.

In fiscal year 2022/23, investments worth Rs 32.48 billion were approved, but only Rs 9.20 billion, or 28%, was received.

Similarly, in fiscal year 2023/24, only 13% of approved foreign investment was realized.

Of the Rs 81.69 billion approved that year, only Rs 10.29 billion entered Nepal.

The report says the widening gap between approved and actual investment highlights the need for policy stability, simpler administrative procedures, and a more investment-friendly environment to convert commitments into real investment.
