KATHMANDU: The government’s drive to transform Nepal’s postal service into a modern, technology-based public utility has gained momentum, with more than 207,000 passports and 808,000 driving licenses delivered through the national postal network since the current administration took office.
According to the Department of Postal Services, 207,834 passports have been transported to 75 District Administration Offices, while 6,293 have been delivered directly to citizens’ homes. The department said doorstep passport delivery will soon be expanded to Humla and Bhojpur. It has also distributed 808,044 driving licenses to transport offices nationwide and delivered licenses directly to residents in several districts.
The department said the postal network has also begun delivering academic certificates, laboratory samples, medical supplies, and government documents as part of the government’s governance reform agenda. It has transported 198,307 parcels, letters, and Express Mail Service items, while 50 post offices have been selected for conversion into smart, IT-based service centers.
Director General Manmaya Bhattarai Pangeni said the modernization effort aims to provide government services directly to citizens’ doorsteps. The department has also upgraded the postal code system, modernized mail tracking, strengthened international postal logistics, and expanded partnerships with government agencies and airlines to improve efficiency and service delivery.
