KATHMANDU: Chair of the CPN-UML and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is undergoing gallbladder surgery today.

Doctors involved in his treatment had scheduled the operation in advance, and hospital sources confirm that he has already been taken to the operation theatre. The procedure is being performed by a medical team led by Paleswan Joshi Lakhey to remove gallstones, including a 22 mm stone detected in his gallbladder.

Oli was arrested on March 28, a day after the formation of the new government, on allegations related to the suppression of Gen Z protests. Since his arrest, he had been receiving treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Following his detention, his wife Radhika Shakya filed a habeas corpus petition at the Supreme Court of Nepal, claiming he was being held unlawfully.

On April 6, the Supreme Court ordered authorities to complete the investigation against Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak by April 9. The court also stated that if the investigation was not concluded within the deadline, they should be released under certain conditions.

In line with the court’s directive, police released Oli from custody and handed him over to his wife. Despite his release, he has remained in the hospital to undergo the scheduled surgery.
