JANAKPURDHAM: Speaker Ram Ashish Yadav has adjourned the Madhesh Province Assembly meeting indefinitely after opposition parties continued their protests and disruption for the second consecutive day, demanding amendments to the provincial budget.
As soon as the assembly session commenced, lawmakers from the opposition parties stood up to protest. Speaking at the meeting, Janamat Party leader and provincial assembly member Sanjay Kumar Yadav criticized the government’s budget as impractical. He demanded immediate amendments and declared that the opposition would not allow the house to function until their demands were met.
Amid the ongoing disruption, Finance Minister Yubaraj Bhattarai requested time from the Speaker to address the house. Although the Speaker granted him time to speak, Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal lawmaker Upendra Mahato intercepted, preventing the Finance Minister from delivering his response.
Mahato accused the CPN-UML, Nepali Congress, and CPN (Maoist Centre) of engaging in activities aimed at dismantling federalism. He alleged that the government was intentionally working to defame the federal structure but asserted that federalism could not be destroyed despite the government’s efforts.
“The government has developed a flawed practice of centralizing funds for projects that are not even listed in the Red Book. This will only increase the financial burden in the coming days,” Mahato argued.
Following Mahato’s remarks, while the Finance Minister was still seeking time to speak, Speaker Yadav suddenly adjourned the provincial assembly meeting indefinitely. The abrupt adjournment has prompted opposition parties to question the Speaker’s working style and impartiality.
