KATHMANDU: The National Assembly meeting has been adjourned until June 9 following protests by lawmakers demanding that the Prime Minister retract his controversial remarks regarding the Nepal-India border issue.

As soon as Wednesday’s session commenced, members of the National Assembly stood up in protest, declaring they would not allow parliamentary proceedings to move forward until Prime Minister Balendra Shah corrected his statement. This forced the postponement of the meeting for nearly a week.

Speaking during the session prior to the disruption, National Assembly member Sunil Bahadur Thapa labeled the Prime Minister’s remarks as irresponsible, baseless, and immature. He urged the PM to apologize and formally withdraw the statement, warning that such rhetoric could severely damage relations with the neighboring country. Thapa also challenged the Prime Minister to present any evidence of border encroachment before the parliament if it existed.

Despite repeated requests from National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal for the lawmakers to take their seats and allow the house to function, the opposition persisted.

Consequently, the Chairman adjourned the session to June 9. The ongoing protests by lawmakers over the Prime Minister’s remarks have continuously disrupted National Assembly proceedings for the past few days.
