KATHMANDU: Opposition lawmakers in Wednesday’s House of Representatives meeting fiercely criticized Prime Minister Balendra Shah for his controversial remarks on border issues, demanding the Speaker issue a ruling to correct his statements and remove them from the parliament’s records.

Nepali Communist Party MP Gopal Sharma slammed the government for fostering accountability issues, pointing out that even ministers have begun competing to make irresponsible statements, such as Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle allegedly threatening lawmakers from the rostrum and another minister threatening to “break legs.”

Sharma questioned the Home Minister on what action would be taken if an ordinary citizen issued such physical threats, while accusing the government of failing to uphold the law.

Adding to the criticism, Shram Sanskriti Party MP Harka Sampang drew attention to ongoing protests at holding centers for landless settlers due to a severe lack of food and water, urging the government to allocate a budget for their rehabilitation.

Sampang echoed demands for the Speaker to issue a ruling regarding the Prime Minister’s border remarks.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress MP Chandra Mohan Yadav questioned the neutrality of Speaker Aryal, openly asking whether he had failed to sever ties with his former party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), since taking the chair.
