KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order directing authorities not to proceed with the dissolution of student organisations.
A single bench of Justice Shrikanta Paudel issued the order on Monday, also directing both sides to appear for further discussion on the matter.
The decision comes after a writ petition was filed on May 8 challenging the government’s move to ban student organisations.
Student groups including ANNFSU and ANNFSU (Revolutionary) had filed the petition, arguing that the decision violates constitutional rights to organisation, expression, and democratic freedoms.
The legal challenge follows strong objections from student leaders after the government unveiled a plan on March 28 to remove party-affiliated student organisations from schools and universities.
The proposal was part of a 100-point work plan approved by the Cabinet and later made public.
Under the plan, all structures of political student organisations in educational institutions were to be dismantled within 60 days.
The government had argued that the move was aimed at improving academic standards, reducing political interference in education, and addressing concerns that existing student bodies were not effectively representing students’ interests.
