KATHMANDU: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police has stated that its serious attention has been drawn to an incident where threatening emails were sent to various individuals by misusing its name and the identity of the Bureau Chief.
Issuing a press release, the Bureau stated that some individuals have been using its name to send email messages aimed at pressuring recipients into making immediate contact by threatening them with legal action.
According to the statement, the emails contain English text to the effect of: “If you want to prevent legal action against you by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), reply to this message immediately, otherwise a case will be filed in court.”
Clarifying that such messages are unauthorized, the CIB stated that these emails were not sent by the Bureau or the Bureau Chief.
The Bureau also made it clear that it has not reached out to any individual via email or similar correspondence using its name.
The Bureau has urged the general public not to believe in such misleading and rumor-mongering emails and to refrain from responding if received.
It has also requested individuals to contact the relevant authorities for any necessary information or verification.
According to the CIB, the Cyber Bureau of the Nepal Police is currently investigating the incident.
The Bureau added that necessary action will be taken against those involved in such activities in accordance with the prevailing laws.
In the statement issued by Senior Superintendent of Police and CIB Spokesperson Anupam Shamsher JBR, everyone has been urged to remain vigilant against cyber-enabled fraud and activities that spread misinformation.
