KATHMANDU: Iran and Belgium shared the points after playing out a goalless draw in their second Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday night.
In a highly competitive match played at the SoFi Stadium, both teams created some excellent scoring opportunities but failed to find the back of the net.
Iran thought they had taken an early lead in the 25th minute when striker Mehdi Taremi found the net, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside.
Later in the 66th minute, Belgium’s Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red card and sent off after a harsh foul on Taremi.
Belgium was reduced to 10 men following Ngoy’s dismissal, but Iran was unable to capitalize on the numerical advantage.
Prior to this match, Iran had kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand. To keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive, Iran will now face a crucial must-win match against Egypt on June 27.
