KATHMANDU: A spectacular solo goal from Vinicius Jr., on his 50th international appearance, saved Brazil from a historic opening-match defeat as the five-time champions drew 1–1 with Morocco at MetLife Stadium.
Morocco initially took the lead in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari capitalised on a defensive miscommunication to lob goalkeeper Alisson Becker, marking the first time the African champions have ever scored against South American opposition at a World Cup.
Despite Morocco dominating the first half with 12 shots in the opening 30 minutes, they failed to extend their lead.
Vinicius Jr. equalised 13 minutes before halftime, blasting a fierce strike past Yassine Bounou after a feed from Bruno Guimaraes.
Though Lucas Paqueta and Raphinha came close to scoring for Carlo Ancelotti’s side in front of watching legends like Ronaldo and Kaka, neither team could find a winner.
The result keeps Brazil’s remarkable 92-year unbeaten record in World Cup opening matches intact while extending Morocco’s wait for a debut-game victory.
