KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned that even though this year’s monsoon is expected to be weaker with less rainfall, the risk of floods and landslides could still increase.

The department said that pauses in monsoon activity followed by sudden weather buildup can trigger intense, localized rainfall with thunderstorms, increasing the likelihood of flash floods and landslides.

It cautioned against assuming a weak monsoon means safety, noting that “fragmented rainfall” concentrated in small areas can still cause severe damage.

The department has urged the government and concerned agencies to maintain preparedness and response plans, and to keep rescue teams alert in high-risk areas.
