AHMEDABAD: More than 100 bodies have been recovered following the crash of Air India Flight 171 shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, according to rescue workers cited by Reuters. The plane, carrying at least 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a highly densely populated area, causing significant casualties.
Indian news channel CNN News-18 reported that the aircraft struck the dining area of the state-run B.J. Medical College doctors’ hostel, resulting in the deaths of many medical students. Visuals showed a part of the wreckage perched atop the building.
A senior police officer told reporters, “The building on which it has crashed is a doctors’ hostel… we have cleared almost 70 to 80 percent of the area and will clear the rest soon.”
Authorities in London confirmed that the flight was scheduled to land at Gatwick Airport at 6:25 pm local time (17:25 GMT). ANI news agency added that at least 90 emergency responders are currently working at the crash site.
Rescue operations continue amid concerns over the number of people still trapped under the debris.
