KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has warned it will launch fresh protests if the government fails to pass the long-pending School Education Bill without further delay.
In a statement issued Monday, Federation President Laxmi Kishor Subedi and General Secretary Tul Bahadur Thapa Magar stressed that the April 30 agreement with the government must be respected.
They urged the government to table and pass what they called a “progressive” bill that incorporates past agreements with teachers and stakeholders.
The bill is still under discussion in the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee of the House, but key issues—including the fate of private schools and integration of relief teachers—remain unresolved.
“There is no room for delay or conspiracy,” the Federation warned. “If the process is obstructed again, we will be compelled to resume our agitation.”
The Federation called on the government to act responsibly and avoid triggering unrest and public dissatisfaction.
Earlier this year, teachers held a 29-day protest in Kathmandu, which was suspended following a deal to pass the bill by June 29—a deadline now missed.
The Federation said the teaching community’s trust is eroding and frustration is rising over the government’s repeated delays.
