FRANCE: France has decided to formally recognize the State of Palestine.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced via social media that he will officially present this decision at the United Nations General Assembly to be held in New York in September.

He also stressed the urgent need for humanitarian aid in Gaza and called for a ceasefire.

Palestinian officials have welcomed Macron’s decision. Israel, however, responded by saying that the move rewards Hamas’ terrorism, referring to the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Macron described the move as a historic commitment and emphasized that it is crucial for peace in the Middle East. “We need guarantees for Hamas’ disarmament and an initiative to ensure Israel’s commitment to establishing peace in the region,” he stated.

Macron has already sent a letter to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas regarding the matter. Reacting to Macron’s announcement, Abbas’ aide Hussein Al-Sheikh said the decision respects international legal values and norms.

He added that it supports the Palestinians’ aspiration for an independent state and helps enhance their sense of dignity. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the decision in a post on social media.
