Update: Landslides in Ilam claim 34 lives

KATHMANDU: The death toll from landslides in Ilam district has risen to 34.

According to Ilam’s Superintendent of Police, Ek Narayan Koirala, landslides continued from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.

Four people died in Sandakpur, seven in Maijogmai Rural Municipality, six in Ilam Municipality, one in Phakphokthum Rural Municipality, three in Mangsebung Rural Municipality, eight in Deumai Municipality, and five in Suryodaya Municipality.

Four people are still reported missing due to the landslides, Koirala added.

While moderate rain prevailed until Saturday afternoon, heavy rainfall began overnight.

Chief District Officer Sunita Nepal confirmed that landslides started late Saturday night following intense rainfall.

Over the past 24 hours, Ilam recorded heavy precipitation. Meteorologist Pratibha Manandhar of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported 325.2 millimeters of rainfall in Ilam during the last 24 hours.

Currently, the rainfall has stopped in Ilam.

While rain has eased in Bagmati Province, most areas of Madhes Province and Koshi Province continue to experience rainfall.
