KATHMANDU: Widespread snowfall and rain since Tuesday night have disrupted daily life across Nepal, particularly in Himalayan and high-hill districts, forcing road closures, halting flights, and affecting electricity and communications in several regions.

Heavy snowfall has been reported in Manang, Mustang, Dolpa, Humla, Mugu, Jumla, Bajura, Baglung, Rukum East, Myagdi, Dolakha, and parts of Karnali Province. Snow accumulation has reached up to two to three feet in upper Himalayan areas, while lower hills have seen continuous rain and a sharp drop in temperature.

Key highways, including the Mid-Hill Highway and the Nagma-Gamgadhi road linking Jumla and Mugu, remain fully blocked, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. Several airports, including Jufal in Dolpa and Simikot in Humla, have suspended operations due to snow-covered runways.

In Manang and Mustang, snowfall has affected local movement and tourism. Authorities have temporarily restricted travel to high-altitude destinations such as Tilicho Lake, Thorong La Pass, and Muktinath until conditions improve. Security forces are actively clearing snow from major routes.

In Karnali, snowfall and rain have disrupted power, communication services, and election campaigns ahead of the February 21 polls.

Despite hardships, farmers across mountain districts have welcomed the precipitation, saying it will benefit winter crops such as wheat and barley and improve soil moisture after prolonged dryness.

Weather officials have advised travelers to monitor forecasts closely and avoid high-risk routes until snowfall subsides and roads are cleared.
