KATHMANDU: The Election Commission of Nepal has announced that the counting of votes for the House of Representatives elections held on March 05 has been completed. In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commission confirmed that the final results for all 165 constituencies under the first-past-the-post system & proportional representation system have been officially published.
Six political parties crossed the three percent threshold in the proportional representation system and have been recognized as national parties. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured 57 seats, the Nepali Congress 20 seats, the Nepal Communist Party (UML) 16 seats, the Nepal Communist Party 9 seats, the Shram Sanskriti Party 4 seats, and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party 4 seats. The Election Commission has instructed the political parties to submit the names of the candidates elected under the proportional system within three days.
The counting of votes under the proportional representation system has also been completed, with seats allocated according to Section 60 of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2017. Out of a total 18,930,689 registered voters, 11,168,032 voters participated in the first-past-the-post elections, of which 10,559,017 votes (94.55%) were deemed valid. In the proportional representation system, 11,280,617 votes were cast, of which 10,835,025 votes (96.05%) were valid, while 445,592 votes were rejected. The Commission noted that measures such as sample voting and voter education programs had been implemented to reduce invalid votes.
According to the proportional representation results of the March 5 elections, only six out of 64 parties have crossed the three-percent threshold, securing representation in the House of Representatives. The remaining 58 parties failed to meet the requirement and will remain unrepresented.
