KATHMANDU: Opposition lawmakers launched a fierce offensive against the government during Thursday’s House of Representatives session, raising serious allegations of executive overreach, constitutional interference, and breach of parliamentary decorum.

Lead opposition MP Narendra Kumar Kerung of the Nepali Congress demanded a parliamentary probe committee following viral social media reports alleging that the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) detained and pressured leadership from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) inside the PMO to issue arrest warrants.

Echoing these concerns, Nepali Communist Party (NCP) MP Ramesh Malla warned that using the PMO for coercive detentions and interrogations undermines democracy, demanding strict action if constitutional heads were indeed compromised.

The opposition further cornered Prime Minister Balendra Shah over his controversial parliamentary remarks that “Nepal has also encroached upon Indian territory,” calling it an insult to national sentiment.

Lawmakers demanded the statement be expunged from House records and urged the PM to issue an official apology.

Additionally, the government faced intense criticism for failing to publicize probe reports regarding Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, with lawmakers questioning the lack of transparency in his clearance.

CPN (UML) Chief Whip Ain Mahar raised a formal point of order, condemning two cabinet ministers for violating House Rule 20(6) by walking between the Speaker and a speaking lawmaker, demanding a strict ruling on parliamentary discipline.
