KATHMANDU: The Constitutional Council is meeting at 5 pm Thursday to recommend next Chief Justice after President Ram Chandra Paudel issued an ordinance clearing legal hurdles related to council decisions and quorum.

The meeting, to be chaired by Prime Minister Balen Shah, is expected to finalize a recommendation for the vacant post following the retirement of former Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut.

Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla has been leading the Supreme Court since his retirement.

The Judicial Council had earlier forwarded six eligible names, including Malla, for consideration.

If past practice continues, Malla is considered the leading contender.

The recommended candidate must pass a parliamentary hearing before formal appointment.
