BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Donald Trump that trade negotiations between the two countries were making progress during their two-day summit in Beijing, but warned that disagreements over Taiwan could push relations into a “dangerous situation” and even lead to conflict.

The warning came during a closed-door meeting lasting more than two hours, according to China’s foreign ministry. Xi said Taiwan was the most sensitive issue in U.S.-China relations and warned mishandling it could trigger confrontation, though the U.S. summary of talks did not mention the issue.

Despite tensions, both sides described progress in economic discussions, including outcomes from recent trade talks in South Korea and efforts to maintain a fragile trade truce reached last year.

Trump and Xi also discussed trade, agriculture, Middle East tensions, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula, with plans to expand Chinese market access for U.S. firms and increase investment flows.

The summit, Trump’s first visit to China in nearly a decade, comes amid wider geopolitical strains, including the Iran war and ongoing disputes over tariffs, semiconductors, and Taiwan arms sales.
