KATHMANDU: Opposition parties registered a motion of urgent public importance in the National Assembly on Wednesday to draw the government’s attention toward monsoon disaster management and preparedness.

The motion was jointly filed by the Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), Nepali Communist Party and Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal in accordance with Rule 67 of the National Assembly Regulations, 2018, seeking clear responses from the Home Minister.

Sponsored by Nepali Congress National Assembly Parliamentary Party Leader Kamala Panta, the proposal demands an update on the current implementation status of the National Monsoon Preparedness and Response Action Plan 2026, alongside general disaster readiness.

According to Nepali Congress Whip Padam Bahadur Pariyar, the motion raises key questions regarding the execution, coverage, localized availability, timing, and overall effectiveness of the government’s free SMS early warning system.

Pariyar emphasized that the proposal aims to guide the government to prevent further crises by forcing transparency regarding its ongoing response efforts.

Furthermore, the motion highlights the need for immediate action on emergency rescue budgets, relief fund balances, alternative planning, post-disaster rehabilitation, and targeted protections for vulnerable, high-risk communities.
