DHAKA: Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin is expected to resign, with official and political sources indicating that preparations are underway for his departure from office.

According to reports, arrangements have begun to move Shahabuddin’s belongings from the presidential residence, Bangabhaban, to his private home in Gulshan. He is also expected to travel abroad for medical treatment after leaving office.

Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, the president must submit a written resignation to the Speaker of Parliament. If the post becomes vacant, the Speaker will serve as acting president until a new head of state is elected within 90 days.

Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed recently returned to Dhaka from Thailand, reportedly amid expectations that the resignation process could begin soon.

Shahabuddin, who assumed the presidency in April 2023, is facing growing political pressure following Bangladesh’s changing political landscape. However, neither the President’s Office nor the interim government has officially confirmed his resignation.
