KATHMANDU: In an effort to institutionalize financial transparency and accountability within the country’s political system, the government has announced a proposal to provide state subsidies to political parties.

Presenting the federal budget for Fiscal Year 2026/27 before a joint session of the Federal Parliament on Friday, Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle stated that the government intends to initiate a formal process to grant state financial assistance to political entities.

According to Dr. Wagle, the subsidy distribution mechanism will be debated and structured based on the total number of popular votes secured by respective parties during the country’s most recent general elections.

To ensure strict financial discipline and prevent any misuse of state resources, the Finance Minister emphasized that all state funds allocated under this scheme will be subject to mandatory and rigorous financial auditing.

Through this measure, the government aims to establish a transparent foundation for political funding, reduce the influence of unregulated campaign financing, and strengthen democratic accountability.
