KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started source segregation and management of waste in 10 wards to reduce the volume of waste taken to Bancharedanda.

Sarita Rai, head of KMC’s Environment Department, stated that they have initiated source segregation and management to extend the lifespan of the Bancharedanda waste management site.

The metropolitan city has pushed forward the source segregation waste management program in Wards 12, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 27.

According to Chief Rai, following the implementation of source waste management, only 15 trucks of waste from KMC are currently being taken to Bancharedanda daily.

Previously, up to 20 trucks of waste were sent daily when it was not segregated.

She mentioned that after starting the daily management of segregated waste across seven zones within the metropolitan city, the volume of waste has decreased by about 3.19 metric tons.

Chief Rai said, “The segregation has been done specifically to segregate urban waste at its source, ease transportation, and reduce the overall volume for final disposal.”

The metropolitan city has stated that a scientific method will be adopted by classifying seven zones to also sell dry waste produced alongside household waste.

By implementing the Waste Collection and Transportation Procedure 2024, work has progressed to reduce, reuse, and dispose of waste based on zonal management through segregation.

The procedure for collecting and transporting community waste was issued either through public-private partnerships, purchasing services from the private sector, or through a revenue contract process.
