KATHMANDU: Kathmandu’s roads face total gridlock within two years without immediate reform, Senior Superintendent of Police Suresh Prasad Kafle warned the Federal Parliament’s Infrastructure Development Committee on June 16.
To curb rampant traffic violations, Kafle proposed drastically increasing fines for traffic rule violaters to a range of Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000.
He emphasized that the current force of 2,600 nationwide officers is overwhelmed by the valley’s 2 million daily vehicles, urging a transition to an AI-generated integrated traffic light system costing up to Rs 20 billion.
Additional recommendations to modernize monitoring and resolve accidents include introducing a vehicle scrap policy, mandatory dashboard cameras and using drones and robots for surveillance.
