MUSTANG: The Himalayan district Mustang has recently become recognized as a major tourist destination in Nepal. Full of natural beauty, Himalayan landscapes, ancient culture, and religious heritage, Mustang is equally attracting both domestic and international tourists.

Located at a high altitude from sea level, Mustang is also called the ‘Himalayan Desert’ of Nepal. The famous Muktinath Temple here is a common pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. Every year, thousands of devotees reach there for the darshan of Muktinath. Similarly, the Lo Manthang Palace, ancient monasteries, stone-built villages, and the scenery along the banks of the Kali Gandaki River have become the main attractions for tourists.

Entrepreneurs say that with the expansion of the road network and easier air access, the arrival of tourists in Mustang has increased significantly. Especially, the number of domestic tourists going via the road route from Pokhara has increased rapidly in recent years. Tourists reach Mustang for mountain observation during the cold season, motorcycle and jeep tours, trekking, and religious visits.

Foreign tourists are also attracted to Mustang due to its unique geography, a lifestyle similar to Tibetan culture, and adventure tourism. According to hotel entrepreneurs, the number of tourists coming from Europe, America, China, and South Asian countries is gradually increasing.

Tourism entrepreneurs have stated that to further promote Mustang internationally, the expansion of infrastructure, sanitation, safe travel, and tourist-friendly services is necessary. Filled with natural and cultural heritage, Mustang is establishing itself as an important foundation for Nepal’s tourism sector.
