KATHMANDU: The National Land Rights Forum staged a protest at Maitighar to pressure the government to resolve the problems faced by landless people, squatters, and unmanaged settlers.
Held under the main slogan “Alert for Land and Housing,” the demonstration saw participation from land rights activists and affected people from various districts across the country. Protesters demanded that genuine landless families be provided with land ownership certificates, that the right to housing be guaranteed, and that no evictions take place without proper alternatives.
They also called on the government to immediately classify genuine landless and squatter communities and distribute land accordingly. The demonstrators urged the implementation of the principle “The tiller should own the land,” demanding ownership rights for people who have been living on the same land for decades. In addition, they demanded an end to the use of bulldozers in squatter settlements without proper alternatives and rehabilitation measures.
Participants carried placards and banners displaying various demands during the protest.
