KATHMANDU: The United Student Movement staged a march inside the Tribhuvan University premises on Tuesday, protesting the government’s reported plan to impose a ban on student organizations affiliated with political parties.

Students marched from Ghantaghar to the TU Gate, voicing strong dissatisfaction with the proposed decision. Protesters argued that banning student organizations would violate constitutional provisions and democratic norms, calling it a direct infringement on civilian rights.

The protesting students demanded that the government immediately withdraw the proposed restriction. They also raised a broader set of demands, reflecting growing frustration over economic and educational issues.

Among their key demands, students called for urgent measures to control rising inflation, an end to the increasing “barrack-style” control of educational institutions, and the implementation of a merit-based system in academia.

They further urged authorities to maintain the existing 45 percent transport fare discount for students. In addition, they opposed any move to dissolve the Free Student Union (FSU), demanding that such decisions be rolled back alongside the proposed ban on student groups.

Through the march, students made clear their opposition to what they see as an attempt to curb democratic space within universities.
