KATHMANDU: Continuous monsoon rainfall causing landslides and riverbank erosion has severely disrupted transport networks across Nepal, forcing the complete closure of nine major highways and prompting safety restrictions on key corridors.

According to Nepal Police details updated early Friday morning, landslides have completely halted traffic on the Mechi Highway at Rajduwali in Ilam, the Araniko Highway at Zerokilo and Kodari in Sindhupalchok, the Kaligandaki Corridor in Baglung, the Mid-Hill Highway at Panikhola in Achham, and the Pasang Lhamu Highway in Rasuwa.

Regional links including the Ghorahi–Thabang Sahid Highway in Rolpa, the Nagma–Gamgadi Road in Mugu, and the Besisahar–Chame–Manang section in Lamjung also remain totally blocked by fallen debris and mudslides.

To mitigate severe disaster risks, authorities have enforced mandatory night travel bans on major transit arteries, prohibiting all vehicles on the BP Highway’s Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunjebesi section between 6:00 PM and 4:00 AM, and along the Kanti Lokpath between 5:00 PM and 5:00 AM throughout the monsoon period.

Meanwhile, riverbank erosion by the Tamakoshi River obstructed the Lamosanghu–Ramechhap road at Kirnetar in Dolakha, though police managed to restore essential connectivity by rerouting vehicles through an alternative detour inside the Khimti Rural Electricity Cooperative premises.
