KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to amend the law to allow changes in the number and boundaries of local levels up to six months before the 2027 local elections.

Current law requires such disputes to be settled at least one year before elections. Boundary disputes involving 102 local units remain unresolved, causing difficulties for residents in accessing public services.

The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration is set to publish a draft amendment bill for public feedback soon.

The proposed restructuring will consider factors such as population, geography, administrative accessibility, infrastructure, economic capacity, and natural resources.

Local government associations have urged the government to resolve ward and boundary disputes as soon as possible.
