KATHMANDU: A government taskforce formed to prepare a discussion paper on constitutional amendments held consultations with former heads of constitutional bodies, ex-chief secretaries, diplomats, and senior administrators.

The three-hour meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office discussed governance system, federal structure, electoral system, and constitutional bodies.

Coordinator Asim Shah said the amendment process will move forward with national consensus, calling it both a public demand and a current necessity.

Experts suggested reforms in governance, electoral system, federalism, and institutional structures.

Key proposals included strengthening proportional representation, reducing National Assembly seats, limiting MPs to lawmaking, and introducing a directly elected executive.

Participants also stressed revising the Constitutional Council, reducing ministries, empowering local governments, ensuring inclusion, and maintaining geopolitical balance.

The taskforce said it will incorporate the suggestions into its discussion paper and continue consultations.
