KATHMANDU: The premiere of film Bhutan, starring Haribansha Acharya in the lead role, at QFX Civil Mall, Sundhara, Tuesday evening was well-attended by a large audience of politicians and artists.
The film is set to be released across the country this Friday. It has already received positive feedback from early viewers and critics. Actress Manisha Koirala and CPN-UML Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali were among the notable guests at the premiere.
Directed by Binod Paudel, Bhutan is the tragic story of Bhutanese refugees who were forced to leave their home and then resettled in Nepal and third countries. The film documents their ongoing struggle with identity in a foreign land. Shot in Ohio, USA, the film features Haribansha Acharya as a retired national footballer from Bhutan now living in America.
Although he lives a new life in the U.S., the character faces inner battles related to nationality, religion, and self-identity. Director Paudel, known for his earlier film Bulbul, brings this important story to the screen with depth and care. Haribansha Acharya shared his heartfelt experiences during the filming at the premiere event.
CPN-UML leader Pradeep Gyawali praised the film’s acting and direction. “The pain of losing your homeland and identity is beautifully shown through the main character. The audience connects deeply with his emotions. It raises a serious question — what if we had to lose our own identity one day?”
Director Min Bahadur Bham said the film was both touching and technically impressive. “The story is emotional, the technical aspects are well done, and the actors have performed brilliantly,” he said.
Singer Ani Choying Drolma praised Haribansha’s acting, actress Manisha Koirala admired the film’s visuals and emotional depth. Director Nischal Basnet also appreciated the thoughtful storytelling and strong performances.
Bhutan is a joint production by Nepal’s Aawaken Production and America’s Mad Monkey Films, with support from Thakurathee Bros, Vacant Light, and Everest Entertainment America.
