KATHMANDU: The chief of Kathmandu District Police, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bishwa Adhikari, has been transferred following widespread allegations of excessive force during the ongoing Gen Z protests.

According to Nepal Police Headquarters, SSP Adhikari has been reassigned to the central office, while SSP Ramesh Thapa, previously stationed at the Inspector General’s Secretariat, has been appointed as the new Kathmandu District Police Chief.

Police spokesperson Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Binod Ghimire confirmed the decision, stating: “We had submitted the request to the Home Ministry, and the decision came from there.”

The transfer follows mounting criticism of police actions in Kathmandu, where security forces were accused of violent suppression during demonstrations.

Nationwide, the Gen-Z movement has claimed 74 lives so far, including 19 deaths on the first day of protests in the capital due to police gunfire.
