KATHMANDU: Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stated that the recent Gen Z movement would not have occurred if a directly elected president system had been in place.

Speaking at an event organized on Friday at the party office in Paris Danda on the occasion of Constitution Day, Prachanda recalled that the current situation arose because a directly elected executive could not be arranged when the constitution was drafted in 2015.

He said, “A directly elected president was necessary for political stability. There was no consensus. Had there been an agreement, the Gen Z movement would not have taken place, and such large-scale damage would have been avoided.”

Prachanda also claimed that the Gen Z movement demonstrated the importance of a directly elected executive, a fully proportional electoral system, and proper attention to identity-related issues.
