KATHMANDU: Voices demanding that Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently in Nakkhu Jail over a cooperative scam, step down as president of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have emerged.

On Tuesday, during a central committee meeting, a proposal was made that Lamichhane should resign as president until the legal proceedings related to the cooperative scam are concluded.

At the meeting held at the party’s central office, provincial chiefs proposed that Lamichhane should step aside until the cases are resolved.

Sudurpashchim provincial chief Prakash Bista, Koshi provincial chief Sarin Tamang, Lumbini provincial chief Devraj Pathak, and Gandaki provincial chief Rajan Gautam raised this proposal.

Leaders from the other three provinces remained silent on the matter, according to one participant.

The four provincial chiefs expressed that it would only be appropriate for Lamichhane to function as president after the resolution of five cooperative scam cases in various districts.

According to a party leader, the provincial chiefs, who are ex-officio central committee members, raised the issue that Lamichhane should resign from the president post while presenting political proposals from their respective provinces.
