KATHMANDU: The deadline for filing nominations for the election of new leadership at the Nepali Congress Special General Convention has ended. Until the close of the nomination period, only the current General Secretary, Gagan Kumar Thapa, filed a candidacy for the position of party president.
The Election Committee has scheduled 1:00 p.m. to publish the list of candidates. However, the general secretaries are still holding consultations with legal experts.
If no sudden agreement is reached or no alternative decision emerges through negotiations, Thapa is likely to be elected party president unopposed.
For the positions of vice president, nominations have been filed by Farmullah Mansur, Gururaj Ghimire, and Jagadish Narasingh KC. The party statute provides for two vice presidents and two general secretaries.
The Election Committee is preparing the list of candidates for the selection of the 134-member Central Committee. Central Committee member Dev Mahat said preparations are underway to publish the final list.
Central Committee member Ajay Babu Shiwakoti stated that efforts are being made to select the leadership unanimously through the Special General Convention.
