KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki reaffirmed the commitment of the government to protecting and promoting diverse and indigenous festivals, languages, cultures and identity of all communities across the country.

Addressing a cultural program organized by Nepal Tamang Ghedung at Tundikhel, Kathmandu on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar today, PM Karki said that it is the responsibility of the State to respect, preserve and promote the customary traditions, cultures and living styles of all ethnic communities.

Noting that the country is currently striving for peace, good-governance, co-existence, the Head of the Government claimed that sustainable stability could be achieved only through mutual for diversity, tolerance and mutual trust among communities.

In her address, she acknowledged that festivals like Sonam Lhosar would foster a sense of belongingness, originality and national unity while also helping to promote Nepal’s cultural identity on the global stage.

She emphasized the need to preserve indigenous knowledge, skills and cultures and pass them to the future generations.

According to her, the Panchatatwa (five vital elements) and healthy living philosophies associated with the Lhosar reflect the profound indigenous knowledge, science and lifestyle of Tamang community.

The program featured cultural performances, including traditional dances and songs presented by people from Tamang communities.
According to the latest census of 2021, Tamang community’s population stands at around 1.7 million which is around 6 per cent of the total population of the country.
